You are cordially invited to attend An American Celebration on July 4, 2010!

Roanoke Tea Party and Fox Radio 910 are proud to announce a free, non-partisan event for the 4th of July at Roanoke’s Elmwood Park - and educational homage to our Independence.

The past year has seen a divisive and deeply partisan political environment develop across the US, and in our beloved Roanoke Valley as well. When issues are large and differences great, such passions can’t help but be inflamed.

But just as any family puts aside disputes for special events, The Roanoke Tea Party and Fox Radio 910 are inviting everyone, regardless of their political persuasion, to join us on July 4 for An American Celebration at Elmwood Park. You won’t hear denunciations of one party or effusive praise for another – just a joyful accounting of why we are proud to be Americans.

This event will be equal parts celebration, education, discussion and fun. Activities will be offered for children, teens and adults with a sincere appreciation for what the date commemorates, the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. We will hear from area business leaders, military veterans, and naturalized citizens in the Roanoke Valley about what America means to them.
Our keynote speaker will be Sonnie Johnson, Virginia President of The Frederick Douglas Foundation. Sonnie was the runaway hit at our April 15th Tax Day rally earlier this year, and we are all excited to have her back to share her reflections on being an American citizen.

Good, old-fashioned, all-American food will be available all afternoon, along with a variety of informational booths as well as arts and craft exhibits. For the kids we’ll have face painting, a moonwalk, a bouncy, big-glove boxing ring and more.

For those interested in discussing issues relating to our founding documents, we will have a series of panels seated away from the main stage at our Town Hall.
A few other highlights:
  • Recreation of Patrick Henry’s historic “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” address
  • Full reading of the Declaration of Independence
  • Live music from Foundation and Rhythm Brothers
  • A moving Salute to our Veterans, with representatives from the various branches (includes a 21 gun salute!)
  • Raffle for a beautiful, hand-sewn patriotic-themed quilt
  • Everything wraps up by 7 pm - plenty of time to make the fireworks by the river
